Developing alternative fuel sources and fuel additives that sustain lubricity, power and efficiency, while staying within the “Green Zone,” is an overwhelming concept best dealt with by the professionals. Innovative pioneers in new technology come and go, and only a few have staying power. Northington Energy, a Wyoming-based biodiesel supplier, is one of the leaders in the industry. Northington has developed a non-petroleum-based fuel additive, Diesel Boost Plus, which surpasses other mainstream products to replace sulfur in diesel fuel.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets standards for manufacturers to protect the environment and help prevent global warming. Since the introduction of Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel in the United States, diesel owners and others in the trucking industry have had concerns with some of the poor lubricating properties in current fuel supplies. Quick-fix choices are limited to a few petroleum-based additives that only increase the problems of harmful emissions.
“Going green” is terminology used by the EPA and others to show that manufacturers and suppliers are taking steps to eliminate harmful toxins from products. Cleaning our environment to prevent global warming is the No. 1 issue that many worldwide industries face. American consumers and companies are making efforts to use alternative fuel sources like biodiesel. Biodiesel is a fuel created from organic sources and is environmentally friendly because it is biodegradable, nontoxic, and contains no sulfur.
Fuel suppliers, engine manufacturers and trucking companies are doing their part by conforming to new EPA regulations. Toxins like oxides of nitrogen are harmful to humans, animals and plant life. Petroleum and petroleum-based additives containing toxins are more controlled and becoming less dangerous. However, toxins still exist. In 2000, the EPA moved forward with its ruling to make heavy-duty trucks run cleaner, and the 2007 Highway Rule was finalized and began being implemented, lowering harmful pollution by 90 percent in 2007.
The amount of sulfur in diesel fuel had to be lowered to allow modern pollution control technology to be effective. With the introduction of ULSD fuel, diesel owners and others in the trucking industry have had concerns with the poor lubricating properties in current fuel supplies. The EPA is gradually phasing sulfur out of diesel fuel in four tiers. In the final tier, there will be no more sulfur in diesel fuel. Non-sulfur, non-petroleum-based additives are now essential for engine lubrication.
Northington Energy’s new product, Diesel Boost Plus, surpasses other fuel additives. Diesel Boost Plus is 100 percent sulfur-free, 100 percent biodegradable and is produced from WVO and algae. It cleans dirty fuel injectors, increases climbing ability and is effective in all fuels including biodiesel and ULSD. Diesel Boost Plus is the only non-petroleum-based diesel additive and is available exclusively at Pilot Travel Centers.
With a growing concern over “food for fuel,” Northington took measures to produce this product using non-food sources such as algae, rather than food sources, like soybean and corn. Boost also exceeds all EPA diesel fuel additive tiers as well as all American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM) specifications.
Each of Northington Energy’s facilities is green certified. They also won the 2008 Green Power Leadership award.
Northington’s newest division is focused on the racing community with its new Research 3 Biodiesel (R3b), which will be distributed from the company’s Southeast-based sales office and will be available through select racing fuel suppliers across the United States. Northington technicians are working with automotive manufacturers and racing teams whose competition programs are increasing their use of renewable biofuels.
Northington Energy’s director of new business developments, Lisa Horn, says, “We are excited about our ‘ultra-refined biodiesel’ research and development facility and the positive impact it will have on the industry. It will help the community produce new, quality fuels that are good for the environment, farmers and consumers. We think the biodiesel business we’re in will generate new jobs, and our environmentally friendly plant will be an asset to the community.”
On the racing circuit, Formula One, Indy Racing league and NASCAR have explored or are using alternative fuels. German manufacturer Audi had three R10 TDI prototypes running on biofuel at the 24-hour Le Mans series, the world’s most prestigious endurance race. “We have been working for more than two years to develop a premium laboratory quality biodiesel fuel for the racing industry,” says Horn. “We are very excited about the positive impact it will have as the auto racing circuits are starting to embrace alternative fuels.
Ed Leddy, marketing director for Pilot Travel Centers, says, “Diesel Boost Plus will be available at all Pilot Travel Centers nationwide in September 2009. Boost Plus was test marketed in a number of locations and was favored over other leading brand-name additives. Boost is available in 1-quart or 1-gallon containers and requires mixing: 1 quart per 125 gallons of diesel or 1 gallon per 500 gallons of diesel.”
Pilot Travel Centers is “proud to be offering our customers a non-petroleum-based, 100 percent biodegradable additive that has no sulfur and offers improved performance and power,” Leddy says.
Ingenuity, inventiveness, innovative technology, intestinal fortitude and a little luck are required for a company to rise above the competition and become a revolutionary leader. Northington Energy and Pilot Travel Centers are thriving in a competitive marketplace.

I have been using Diesel Boost for almost 2 months and have noticed an an MPG increase of about .8 MPG. This increase was noticeable with the very first tank full after adding the product. AMAZING…..
With winter coming on I am curious about the anti-gelling characteristics of this product. I really don’t want to have to switch to a different product just because of winter.
Thanks,
